During a routine inspection

People we spoke with during our visit told us that they were pleased with the service. We saw many examples of compliments for the staff in cards and letters sent by relatives. We looked at questionnaires completed by relatives and saw comments such as "excellent care" and a description of the service as "professional".

We found that staff had undertaken appropriate safeguarding training and this was regularly updated. They were able to describe the process for raising a concern and said they would feel confident doing this. Two people we spoke with during the visit said they felt they were safe and they could raise concerns. We saw that information about raising a concern was displayed throughout the home.

We looked at how staff were supported to do their jobs well and found that they were given appropriate training and support.

We found that there were systems in place to regularly review many different aspects of the service. This was done to ensure that standards were being maintained. The service worked with a compliance manager who supported the registered manager to undertake regular audits and reviews of the service.

We spoke with both staff and people using the service about the procedures for raising concerns. We also asked a relative if they felt they could raise concerns. We found that people knew about how to make a complaint and felt confident that concerns would be addressed.

During a routine inspection

This was a follow up visit to check whether the provider had completed the action plan submitted to the Care Quality Commission following their last inspection in May 2012. We spoke with three people who lived at the service, and two relatives. We also observed people being supported by staff in the dining room and other communal areas.

People we spoke with were unanimous in their view that the home was kept clean and well maintained. One person told us that the home was 'very clean.' Another person told us that the home was clean and 'felt homely.'

During our visit we observed people being supported in individual rooms and communal areas by staff. Residents and their relatives commented that staff were good. One relative told us that staff were 'caring and friendly.' Two residents and one relative that we spoke with perceived that the home sometimes did not have enough staff. One person told us that 'they could do with a few more staff.'

During an inspection in response to concerns

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service these included spending time talking with people and observing their general demeanour, talking with staff and gathering evidence of people's experiences through looking at compliments and the complaints log. We also sought responses from seeking people's or their relatives and friends views through the organisations formal quality assurance process.

We spoke with five people's relatives on the telephone following our visit. Responses were mixed. Some people's responses were positive, one describing the care their relative received as 'phenomenal' another described the service their relative received as 'very good care.' However, other people's relatives commented that care was not always consistently given and that the care plan was not always followed.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Generally people said they liked living at Kings Lodge Care Centre and they thought the food and staff were good.

However they told us that they would like more to do and be able to talk to people more. Some people said that they did not like people coming into their rooms uninvited. Some people also said that they thought there were not enough staff at weekends.
