All Inspections

28 August 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with nine people who lived at Oakhaven, and with two visitors. We also spoke by telephone with a healthcare professional to get their views about the service.

People overall were very contented and told us they received good care. Their comments included 'I like it here. We get good food.' Another said 'The staff are friendly and they listen to me.' A third told us 'I get wonderful care and I'm very happy here.' We saw the atmosphere at the service was relaxed and friendly and we observed staff sitting and talking with people who lived there.

People told us they were included and involved in decisions about their care and that they received good, individualised care, in line with what they were wanting.

We found the service had good medication systems to ensure people were receiving their medicines safely and at the times they needed them.

The provider followed a robust recruitment and selection process to ensure only staff that had been properly vetted were employed to work there.

The service had a robust complaints process and people told us they would tell either a member of staff or their family if they were unhappy about their care or how the service was being run.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with 13 people and three visitors during our inspection. None of those people provided any negative information about the service. They made comments like 'There are enough staff. If you need help they help you straight away. We couldn't be better cared for.' Another added 'I feel safe and very lucky to live here.' Visitors described the service as 'Fantastic,' and 'Outstanding.' One person had moved to the home a few weeks earlier. Their relative said 'Everyone's been so nice and welcoming. I think my relative will thrive here.'

We found people's care needs were being met. Care records overall provided accurate and up to date information about the care people needed. We saw people looked well-cared for and observed care staff speaking with people, and listening to what people said to them. People we spoke with told us that care staff routinely checked with them, before helping them with any care needs.

We found that although the home was clean and fresh smelling the systems in place to ensure that good infection prevention and control practices were being followed could be improved.

People living there and staff we spoke with told us there were generally enough care staff working to ensure their needs were met in a timely way.

1 November 2011

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who live at Oakhaven. All told us they were very satisfied with the care they received, and the staff that helped them. None of the people we spoke with said anything negative about the service.

Some of their comments include 'The care's very good. We get the right help and the right food.' Another said 'I've been happy here for two years. The staff ask me to do things myself. I like to do things myself, but it takes me longer.' Another added "I think if you get into here, then you're very fortunate.'

People spoke warmly about the staff who work there. They made comments like 'The staff are marvellous. We couldn't wish for better staff. They always seem to have time for you.' Another added 'The staff are A1. They couldn't speak any better to me than they do.' And 'The staff are very kind. They seem to be aware of anything that we need.'

We also observed the way care staff spoke with and generally interacted with the people living there. We found that people were treated in a sensitive and respectful manner. The atmosphere in the home was relaxed and there was a lot of general banter and laughter.
