During a routine inspection

We visited the home, met and spoke with the people living there, viewed some of their care files and those of staff. We looked at other records kept by the home and spoke with staff and the manager.

The people living in the home have various levels of dementia, when sitting with them, some expressed themselves well and they told us that the staff were kind and they cared for them. Two people told us they liked the meals and they enjoyed joining in the game that they were taking part in.

The care plans contained detailed assessments which were used to plan peoples' individual care along with input and agreement with families. The daily records kept showed that staff were meeting their care and welfare needs.

We reviewed the medication records and found that medication was now being audited regularly, and that people were now receiving the medication as prescribed.

We found that staff had been recruited in a way that protected the vulnerable people they cared for and that there were arrangements in place for new staff to undergo an induction to make sure they had appropriate skills and knowledge to meet the needs of people living in the home.

There were quality audit systems in place to check the quality of the care and support given to individuals. There was also a complaints procedure to follow for people if they were not happy with anything at the home.

During a routine inspection

Although communication was difficult as people had a diagnosis of dementia two people spoken with expressed satisfaction with their care and said they enjoyed the food. Two relatives who visited frequently told us they were happy with the quality of the care given to their mothers and had no concerns.

Survey completed by relatives received by the home expressed satisfaction of

the care received and were very complimentary of the staff team.

The care plans contained detailed assessments which were used to plan peoples' individual care along with input and agreement with families. The daily records kept showed that health issues for example had been recorded and followed up with health professional's having been contacted when necessary.

We reviewed the medication records and found that medication stock had not been recorded and therefore it was not clear if people had received the medication they were prescribed.

We found that there were sufficient numbers of staff with appropriate skills and knowledge on duty to meet the current needs of people living in the home.

There were quality audit systems in place to check the quality of the care and support given to individuals.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This review was carried out to follow up whether the service had met a compliance action they had been set at their last review. The provider sent us records to prove that they had taken action to ensure people living at the home were not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment. We did not speak with people living at the home to assess this outcome on this occasion.

27 April 2011

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people, and one relative. People said that they liked the home and were happy there. One person said 'It's a good home, and the manager is very helpful', another said 'they look after me well'. The relative we spoke with said the manager and staff were very helpful and would do anything for you'.

People said the routines of the home were flexible and suited them, they said the activities were fine but they often preferred their own company.

People we spoke with said the food was very good, nicely cooked and there was always a choice if they didn't like what was on the menu. People liked their rooms and said they were able to bring in personal possessions with them.

The home has some tropical fish and had recently been given some newly hatched chickens to look after, and one person living at the home we spoke with was particularly enjoying seeing them grow.

Many of the people living at the home found communicating their views difficult due to their dementia. We saw staff interacting with them in a caring and respectful way throughout our visit.
