All Inspections

21 November 2013

During a routine inspection

When we visited New Swinford Hall we found that 14 people used the service and we met and spoke with five of these people and one relative. We spoke with five members of staff who delivered care and the senior care. We read four people's care records and four care staff records.

We found that the provider had systems in place to gain the consent to care and treatment of people who used the service. We found that staff had an understanding of the needs of people who used the service. We found that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a safe way, which met people's individual care needs. People we spoke with were positive about the care they received. One person told us, "The staff are so caring and kind, they really encourage you."

We found that people were kept safe because staff knew how to protect people from the risk of abuse. We found that there was an effective recruitment process in place to ensure that staff had the skills to meet people's needs.

We found that systems were in place to effectively deal with complaints and respond to suggestions from people. One person told us, "It's really good here, they get you up on your feet and moving again."

6 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people, two family members, four members of staff and the registered manager. People said that staff treated them with respect and maintained their privacy and dignity when providing care.

Care and support were planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. People's needs were assessed and care was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plans. Care plans were drawn up with people, staff and family members. One relative said, 'The staff have been very good, they have looked after them really well'.

The food was described by one person as, 'Brilliant '. Another said, 'It's lovely'.

Medicines were handled appropriately, stored and administered to people safely. The records of medicines given to people were complete, easy to read and signed by the person administering. Regular audits of medicines were completed by two senior members of staff. Only those senior members of staff trained in the administration of medicines were able to give them to people.

People told us that they had confidence in the staffs ability to deliver care and support suitable to the needs of the individual. Staff received appropriate professional development and training.

2 December 2011

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke to three people using the service, four relatives and two staff.

People and relatives told us the Manager and staff were approachable and helpful. One person told us 'some staff go the extra mile.' Relatives told us they felt comfortable to approach the Manager if they had any concerns, and that in the past these have always been resolved.

People told us that staff are just as good at night as they are during the day. One person told us 'they are very caring.' We saw that people were given a choice about how and where they spend their day.

People were encouraged to be independent and had access to two assessment rooms, one for laundry and one for cooking which they could use. One person told us she was encouraged to make a cup of tea with full support from a member of staff. One relative told us that the facilities meant that their mother's independence was promoted.

Relatives could come and visit any time and were able to meet in private. One relative told us she was always welcomed nicely and staff made sure they had everything they needed.

We saw that staff could not communicate with a person who uses the service as they could not speak English. It was difficult for the staff to manage this person's needs and it was frustrating for the person as staff could not understand what they were saying.
