During a routine inspection

Before people went to live at the home assessments were carried out to establish the level of care required.

People's representatives were involved in discussions about the care received and staff at the home took time to explain things, including options, risks and benefits.

People who lived at the home are encouraged to be independent. We saw staff speaking with people, asking them if they wanted help and assisting them if they asked.

We saw people who used the service were encouraged to visit the dentist and were taken to appointments with the help of staff from the home. In addition the home had arranged regular visits from professionals such as chiropodists and opticians. There was also regular monitoring of people's weight and we saw the staff at the home would make referrals to dieticians and GP's if required.

We saw staff at the home had positive relationships with individuals, there was a relaxed and happy atmosphere in the home and people who used the service were comfortable with the carers.

During a routine inspection

A high proportion of people who used the service were unable to express their views to us due to their general medical conditions. In order to determine how care and treatment was provided we spoke with staff, observed their practices and looked at some people's care records. In addition we looked at the communications books held in the home. These books gave details of all actions and events occurring within the home.

People who used the service, their families and professionals who worked with them were given appropriate information and support regarding their care or treatment.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that ensured people's safety and welfare.

The staff felt they cared for people who use the service appropriately but were concerned about some aspects of safety.
