During a routine inspection

We spoke with 14 of the 31 people who were living at the home. They all said they were extremely happy with the way they were cared for. One person told us 'I was anxious before coming into the home; however I wish I'd done it years ago, they treat me really well'. Another said 'the staff are brilliant, I rate them ten out of ten'. A third person told us about activities and said 'I can choose to join in or go on the outings as I want'. Although we were not able to have a conversation with other people we met them and observed their care and staff interactions in communal areas. We also spoke with six visitors. They too were positive about the care their relatives were receiving. One said 'I have no worries; whatever time I visit everything is good'.

We spoke with all staff on duty. Staff were aware of how people should be supported, individual likes and dislikes and the help they required. Staff had sufficient time to meet people's needs and had completed relevant training. Appropriate recruitment procedures were in place.

We observed staff were courteous and respectful of people's views, and choices were offered. The care we observed corresponded with care plans and risk assessments viewed. People were offered a choice of meals which they said they enjoyed. The home was clean and there were systems in place to manage infection control risks. There were also systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not on this occasion speak to people as we were reviewing the home's arrangements for medication. We were told that no one was self administering their medication. When we visited in May 2012 people told us that staff gave them their medication and they were happy with this arrangement.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with visitors and people who lived at the home. We also spent some time in the home's communal areas observing people and the way they were cared for.

We spoke with other professionals involved in the care of people. They stated that they had no concerns about how people's health and care needs were met. Professionals were complimentary about the way the service met people's physical and cognitive needs.

Everyone we spoke with confirmed that people's privacy and dignity were maintained at all times and that people were able to make day to day decisions such as what time they got up and how and where they spent their time.

We observed that people were enjoying their lunch time meal. Those able to respond told us meals were good and that alternatives were provided.

People said that they had no concerns about how their personal care needs were met. They also told us that if they were unwell then staff would contact a doctor for them. We were told that staff were available when people needed them and knew what care they required.

Visitors said that they felt staff were available whenever their relatives needed assistance. They also said that staff were very pleasant and had the necessary time to meet people's needs. Visitors said Holmdale House was very 'homely'.

People and relatives said that if they had any concerns or complaints they would raise these with the manager. Nobody had any concerns when we spoke with them.
