Date of Assessment: 25 March 2025 to 03 April 2025. Ellwood Place Dementia Care Home is a residential care home providing support to up to 30 people. At the time of our assessment there were 18 people using the service, this included people living with dementia and age-related frailties. Staff assessed risks to people's health and safety and mitigated those risks. People had care plans to guide safe practice. People’s needs were assessed prior to them moving to Ellwood Place. However, some health professionals and staff told us those assessments lacked detail regarding supporting people with health conditions. The registered manager told us of actions they had taken to improve the initial assessment process which included staff having access to relevant information and training. There were enough staff to ensure people’s safety and meet their needs. People were consistently protected from abuse and improper treatment. Staff knew people and their needs well. However, there were some gaps in records relating to people’s medicines and care. The registered manager shared details of immediate improvements the service had made. Managers and staff demonstrated their awareness of the importance of promoting people’s rights and independence. Governance measures were generally effective in identifying service shortfalls and assessed, monitored and mitigated risks relating to people’s health, safety and welfare. However, there were some shortfalls in falls auditing processes which had not always considered or analysed trends and patterns. In response to our feedback, the registered manager took robust action to address this. Staff and leaders demonstrated a positive, compassionate, listening culture, promoting trust and understanding between them and people using the service and was focused on learning and improvement. Staff were able to raise concerns; they told us managers were approachable and supportive.

People's experience of the service

Updated 20 March 2025

People were supported to maintain control and make decisions about their care; when supporting people, staff were observed respecting the person’s choices, giving them time whilst encouraging and demonstrated care and kindness. People and their relatives were consistently positive about the support provided by staff and told us they felt safe. One family member told us, “I see staff, they are kind and empathetic and trying to make the residents circumstances as good as they could be” and “We call them the red coats entertainers and blue coats, the carers. They are always visible.” People were engaged, stimulated, and they had opportunities to partake in group or individual activities. Visiting hours were open to suit people; we saw family visiting in the service and joining activities with their loved ones. One relative told us, “I have sent some suggestions to the head of activities. I found some ponies to come in. We are trying to get involved and help with activities.” Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used SOFI which is an evidence-based observational tool to gather people’s experiences. Throughout our visit we observed care that was compassionate, caring and supportive.
