Safeguarding

The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. Staff concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm, and neglect. The provider shared concerns quickly and appropriately. The provider kept clear records of any safeguarding concerns and where appropriate, reported them to the relevant authorities. People felt safe living at assessed The Lawrence. One person told us, “I like it here. I feel safe and I have made new friends here; I like this home. I like talking to people here.” Relatives also felt their loved ones were safe. One relative said, “I think [relative] is safe there yes. I worry about [relative], but I think [relative] is happy and safe. I would give them ten out of ten."

Involving people to manage risks

The provider worked with people to understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. Staff provided care and support to meet people’s needs that was safe, supportive, and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them.Support plans and risk assessments identified potential risks to people’s safety and appropriate mitigating factors were in place. People were encouraged and supported to take positive risks. This allowed them to live as unrestricted a life as possible. Staff were aware of people's individual risks and shared with us how they used techniques to reduce the likelihood of people being harmed.The manager reviewed incidents and information about risks regularly.Staff told us they had access to support plans, and they provided sufficient information and guidance for them to provide safe care and reduce risk.

Safe and effective staffing

The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs. There were suitable numbers of staff available to meet people's assessed needs. We were informed staffing was increased to meet the needs of the service. We received no concerns in relation to staffing levels. One staff said, “Staffing levels are good, everyone is supportive of each other.” Newly appointed care staff went through a comprehensive induction period. This included training for their role, shadowing an experienced member of staff and having their competencies assessed prior to working independently with people. All staff received regular supervision and competency assessments. The provider followed safe recruitment processes and had completed the necessary checks before staff worked with vulnerable people. We received positive feedback about the staff working at The Lawrence. One person told us, “The staff here are all kind and friendly. They are always about to help me if I need it."
