Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

 

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

All people and their relatives told us staff treated them with kindness dignity and respect. Staff were able to explain how they would ensure they protected people’s dignity when supporting people with personal care. We observed people being treated with respectful and in a caring manner.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

All people and their relatives told us staff treated them as individuals. We observed the registered manager and staff to know the people living at the service well. Care records showed staff had considered peoples strengths. Staff were engaging with people and supported them to do the things that mattered to them.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff supported people to remain independent by supporting and encouraging them to do tasks for themselves, where they were able. People told us they were supported to remain independent.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

The registered manager and the management team told us they all worked as part of the team. If a person at the service needed support and care staff were busy, they would step in to make sure people’s needs were met.People and relatives told us they did not have to wait for care.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff felt well supported working at the service. Some staff told us how the provider had supported them with their professional development. Other staff told us how understanding the provider was and how they had supported them with personal difficulties.
