People felt involved in their care and had opportunities to talk to staff about their support should they wish to do so. Where people were not able to take an active role in coordinating their care, staff shared information with relatives where appropriate to do so. The provider had developed a range of opportunities for people, their relatives, staff, and healthcare professionals to express their views and feedback through surveys, etc. However, these had not been completed since 2023.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

People who wished to share their views with us told us they felt involved in their care and had opportunities to talk to staff if they needed to. One person said, “Yes, I can talk to the regular staff if I’m worried, which I have been.” Where people were not able to take an active role in coordinating their care, relatives told us the service communicated well and shared information. Comments included, “Yes, I do get phone calls and updates,” “Yes, I believe so. They phone me if they’ve made a referral like for a hearing test and continence assessment,” “Not formally, but will say what’s what when I visit. Not formally asked for my opinion,” Yes, absolutely, they phone me as she can’t,” and “Yes, they keep me updated all the time.”

The manager and staff understood what barriers might prevent people from receiving good quality care, support and treatment or restrict access to local services. For example, discrimination, background and culture, communication, and/or previous experiences of care. Staff described how they supported people to access services and make day-to-day choices about their care and support. Staff described how they monitored people’s daily well-being and recorded when their health needs changed. This allowed staff to communicate with the person about their ill health, identify if external health or social care support was needed, and provide support to arrange appointments promptly. However, we found people’s care records had not always been updated with this information.

The provider had developed a range of opportunities for people, their relatives, staff, and healthcare professionals to express their views through regular reviews, meetings, and surveys. However, these had not been completed since May 2023. People's care records showed processes were in place to promote the health and well-being of people. For example, care plans identified people's communication needs and guided staff on how people could be supported to understand information and make informed decisions. However, they had not always been updated as people’s needs changed.
