During a routine inspection

Some of the people who lived at the service were not able to communicate with us verbally. They can make their views known through gestures, facial expressions, sign and body language.

We observed the support provided and the interaction between staff and people who used the service. Each person had access to an independent advocate and a care plan which contained detailed information this included risk assessments that enabled and supported people to live their lives safely and in keeping with their choices.

One person told us 'I enjoy going to college.'

We saw the staff were polite and supportive to the needs of people who lived in the service, knocking on doors and waiting to be invited in before they entered. We found the staff were trained to administer medication and had also received various training which included the safeguarding of vulnerable people and infection control.

People were provided with choices and each person had a daily activities plan which they could change if they so wished. During our inspection we observed people playing games, making snacks and drinks and some people had visited the cinema. There was a complaints system in place and staff were supported to deliver care and support by regular staff meetings and supervision sessions and yearly appraisal meetings with the manager. We also found a comprehensive and supportive induction programme in place for new staff.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We used a variety of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service because the people using the service had complex needs which meant some of them were not able to tell us about their experiences. Many people shared their views through gestures, facial expressions and body language, we spoke generally with some people and we observed how people interacted with one another and with members of staff.
