All Inspections

During a routine inspection

When we arrived at Spire Elland Hospital we were met by the hospital matron. They gave us a tour of the hospital site and explained that people who used the services were either self-funded, funded by private health insurance or were NHS patients using the 'Choose and Book' service. The hospital was also responsible for services provided at the Longlands Consulting Rooms in Dewsbury; we did not visit these during this inspection.

We were accompanied on our inspection by a specialist advisor in theatres. They spent time in the two theatres with the theatre manager and observed surgery. They also accompanied a theatre nurse to the ward, followed a patient through their routine checks and observed their journey into the operating theatre. During the afternoon, the specialist advisor spoke with the theatre manager and two theatre staff.

During our inspection we also spent time on the day care unit, the ward and in the outpatients department. We also visited the medical records department and pharmacy dispensary.

We spoke with the hospital's matron, medical director, chair of the hospital's Medical Advisory Committee, clinical effectiveness lead and executive administration manager. We also spoke with fourteen staff in various roles in the areas we visited. These included three nursing sisters, three ward staff, the hospital pharmacist, the pharmacy manager, a healthcare assistant and a medical records clerk.

We spoke with six people who used the service and three peoples' relatives. They all told us they were happy with the care they had received. They also told us they had received information about their procedures prior to their admission to the hospital.

One person told us 'My consultant is very good. I have seen them every day that I've been here. I have no complaints.' Another person said, 'The nursing staff are great. I have been to the hospital before so I knew what to expect. That means a lot, I couldn't ask for better care.'

All of the people we spoke with told us their visitors had been able to visit at any time and were always made to feel welcome by the staff on the ward.

Staff all told us they received all the training and support they needed to carry out their job roles effectively. They told us the hospital was a good place to work and the care provided was excellent.

We found appropriate arrangements were in place for handling medicines and records, including medical records, were accurate and fit for purpose.

During a routine inspection

The Spire Hospital provides a number of consulting rooms, two operating theatres and two wards. The first floor ward includes two high dependency beds. The hospital has an on site pharmacy, sterile services department and physiotherapy department. Catering is provided on site and people we spoke with were complimentary of the food provided.

During our visit we spoke with two people receiving in-patient care at the hospital. Both people were very positive about the service they had received. One person said "I just can't praise them enough, they couldn't have done any more for me and my family. From the consultant to the tea ladies they are just fantastic".

All of the staff we spoke with were enthusiastic about their jobs and said how much they enjoyed working at the hospital.

We observed people who were attending for clinic appointments being treated with respect and courtesy by staff.

On this inspection we did not visit the Longlands consulting rooms.

During a routine inspection

Spire Elland Hospital is located in Halifax. On the day of inspection, only the out patient areas in the hospital were open due to major engineering work that was being carried out to refurbish the operating theatres.

The Spire Dewsbury Clinic is carried out from Longlands Consulting Rooms in Dewsbury which are registered as part of Spire Elland Hospital. The Longlands Consulting Rooms are staffed by consultants, nurses and medical secretaries. Facilities include three consulting rooms, a treatment room and a reception area. Consultations only take place on certain days, on the day of inspection; there were no consultations in progress.

Due to the refurbishment works being carried on at the hospital, we did not talk to any patients as part of this inspection and we only inspected the out patient areas at Spire Elland Hospital.
