During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using the service. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming. During our inspection we spoke with five people who used the service, three members of staff and the deputy manager.

People told us they were happy with the care they received and we observed people getting the care that had been planned for. One person told us, 'The staff are nice and help me'.

People told us they could make choices about their food and drink. One person said, 'I choose what I want to eat'. We saw that people were supported to eat and drink a healthy and balanced diet that met their individual needs.

We saw that people received support with the administration of medicines, however, the systems in place for the recording of medicines were ineffective. This meant that the provider could not account for all of the medicines which were held on the premises.

Staff told us they received training and support to enable them to meet people's needs. We saw staff deliver care and support in a positive and professional manner.

We saw that there was a complaints procedure in place and people were given the opportunity to raise concerns.

During a routine inspection

People living at the home were included in decisions and their care. They were asked about the things they wanted to do and met every month with care staff to discuss their care. People were supported to develop their skills. They took part in jobs around the home including helping with their laundry, keeping their bedroom clean and helping to plan and make their meals.

People received specific care and support to meet their individual needs. Communication needs were identified and people had their own communication plan. For example one person had information in an audio format and another used symbols. This meant that they were supported to communicate effectively and could plan their day's activities.

Care staff had the knowledge and skills to keep people safe. They were trained and knew the signs of abuse and how to respond if they had any concerns about people's safety and welfare.

The recruitment procedure was effective to make sure that care staff were suitable to provide people with their care. All care staff had checks before they started work.

The provider had systems in place to check on the quality of the care people received. Complaints were responded to and the provider acted upon concerns to improve the service.
