All Inspections

13 December 2013

During a routine inspection

We reviewed Moorfields Lodge and spoke with three staff members and looked at four support files, three staff files and three medication files. We looked to see if people had received appropriate care and treatment in relation to their needs. We also looked to see if they had a choice in their care and treatment and when the person using the service did not have capacity, appropriate others were involved to make a decision in the residents best interest. One person who used the service told us, "I like it here."

We reviewed the medication process and records being held and used. Staff told us they were aware of the process and could verbally inform us of this. We found staff to be trained and competent in the administration of medication.

We looked at staff records to find evidence of a full recruitment process and check had been completed prior to any staff administering care or treatment. We found these records were kept in a locked secure place and could be accessed promptly. This showed us records were stored in an appropriate way and staff could source information when needed.

During a routine inspection

During the course of the visit we spoke with the manager, the deputy manager and two members of staff and all four people who used the service.

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service. This was because the majority of people who used the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. For example we observed staff gave people time and engaged with people in a respectful, encouraging and patient way.

The staff we spoke with told us there were clear lines of communication and accountability within the service and they were supported through a planned programme of supervision, appraisals and training.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to communicate with some of the people living at Moorfields Lodge however; through our observations we saw that people seemed confident in their surroundings and in their interactions with staff. We talked to a visiting relative who said they were always made to feel welcome when they visited. They said the staff were friendly, pleasant and helpful and kept them fully up to date with their relatives care and support.
