During a routine inspection

In this report the name of a registered manager appears who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were still a Registered Manager on our register at the time.

There were six people living at the home at the time of the inspection. During our visit we spoke with two people who were using the service and two members of staff. People living at the home said they felt safe and enjoyed the activities. One person told us that he "enjoyed bird watching and was a member of the RSPB" (royal society for the protection of birds). We made observations throughout the visit and saw people being offered choices as to how they wanted to spend their time. Rooms we looked at were personalised with people that used the service choosing the decor and furnishings.

We saw people being addressed in a respectful manner. We looked at people's individual support plans and observed that these were discussed with people who used the service and that these discussions were recorded. We saw that regular audits of the service were completed by the provider ensuring that people who used the service benefitted from a service that monitored the quality of care that people received.

Staff told us that they had received training in protecting adults from abuse and that they felt that they were supported and trained to carry out their roles and meet the needs of people who used the service

During a routine inspection

People told us that they are happy living at the home and that they are able to exercise choice. This includes being able to contribute to the menu planning, how they spend their leisure time as well as any occupational activities. We were also told by people that they contribute to decision making in the home and that they find it rewarding to be involved in domestic routines in the home such as cleaning, gardening and cooking. The people living at the home described attending a wide range of leisure pursuits including art classes at a local art gallery, horse riding, swimming, sailing holidays, trips abroad with staff, visits to their family, social clubs and days out. People also described how they enjoy attending different work placements.

Comments made by people included the following:

' 'I love food shopping. You can choose what you have.'

' 'We do jobs ourselves, like cleaning and growing tomatoes and sunflowers.'

' 'I am happy with everything. I like the garden in the summer when we have barbecues.'

We were told by people that they get the care and support they need and that they sign their individual care plan to say they agree to it. The staff were described as supportive, approachable and friendly.

People said that they like the home's environment. Several people showed us how they have personalised their rooms saying that they have a key to their bedroom door and have lockable storage in their rooms.

We were told by people living at the service that they have a copy of the complaints procedure and that if they had a complaint they would write it down and inform the staff.

Social services' staff with responsibility for placing people at the service told us that the people receive a good standard of care and are supported to have an independent lifestyle. Staff were said to be well trained and supplied in sufficient numbers for people's needs. Reference was made to the skills of staff at the service in managing behaviour. The service was said to be 'person centred' with people's needs and wishes as central.
