Some people living at Stanley Grange had complex communication needs and were unable to easily express their views about the service. Staff guided us in how best to talk with people and we observed the interaction between staff and those they were supporting.

Support plans were individualised and promoted the privacy, dignity and independence of the person concerned. People were happy with the range of activities on offer. Some people were in paid employment. One person spoke with enthusiasm about their job in a caf'; 'We make really, really good food.'

People were supported to carry out domestic tasks, according to their wishes and abilities. Comments included; 'The staff help me. We do housework together. It's teamwork.'

Good support was provided regarding health care. One person told us about a dental appointment saying; 'My key worker will come with me, to sort my teeth, to get my new teeth. Or if I go to the doctor, they take me.' Staff kept good records, helping to ensure that health issues and treatment could be tracked and monitored.

People living at Stanley Grange spoke favourably about staff, telling us they were kind, polite, friendly and approachable. Comments included; 'I like my key worker. I like all the staff.'

Effective recruitment and selection processes, helped to ensure only suitable staff were appointed. Appropriate supervision, support and staff training were provided.

Service users told us about the activities they are involved in and how they are able to choose how to spend their time. One person told us that they enjoy going shopping with staff and another person told us that they like to watch certain television programmes in the evening and this was reflected in their programme of activities. During our visit we observed individuals involved in a range of meaningful activities and a number of people were away from the site, involved in community based activities.

Person centred plans are in place and clearly demonstrate that the individual has been the focus of all decisions about their care and goals for the future.

Service users spoke to us about the care and support provided by staff. One person told us that staff helped her with craft work and card making, which she particularly enjoyed and another person explained how staff had supported her during her initial employment in a caf'.

The service users we spoke to, commented favourably about the staff working at Stanley Grange. Comments included; 'I like the staff, they are helpful.' And 'If something is not right I can tell staff, I am happy here. I like it most of the time.'

A relative told us that he was very happy with the service and explained how the on site facilities provided a degree of freedom and independence for his relative, who was unable to go further afield without staff support.

Staff members told us that they receive good training, have supervision meetings with their line manager and that staff meetings take place. The support, training and development of staff are given a high priority at Stanley Grange.
