During a routine inspection

We spoke at length to one of the thirteen people who used the service and observed others. The person we spoke with told us, "The staff are polite. I know the names of all of the staff. "That, what we saw of other people and what staff we spoke with told us, showed us that staff treated the people they supported with respect. People had been able to make choices about their care and support. A person told us, "I have interesting things to do. I can do what I want". That person described the activities the service had supported them with and it was clear that they had been helped to live as independent a live as possible. The service supoprted people with their health needs. A person who used the service told us, "I get help with my medications.

We found from talking with staff and looking at training records and content of training that care workers had been well trained and supported by the provider. A care worker we spoke with told "we are definitely well supported."

We found that people who used the service were appropriately supported by well trained care workers. The service had effective arrangements for monitoring the quality of service and had listened to the views of people who used the service.

The service is registered to provide regulated activity treatment for disease, disorder and injury but does not in fact carry out that activity. Only personal care is provided. The provider may therefore wish to modify their registration.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we carried out this review of improvements we did not speak with people who used the service. However, we reviewed the provider's action plan in response to our inspection of 14 September 2012 and we received documented evidence of how improvements had been implemented.

10 September 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with each of the two people who lived in accommodation at Shangton. One person told us that he had been supported with routines that were important to him. The other person was able to express to us that he enjoyed living in his home and that he enjoyed the activities he had been able to participate in.

We saw one person who used the service joining in with an activity, a barbeque, that had been organised by volunteers and other people who used other services provided by Self Unlimited.

Our inspection found that people who used the service had been supported to lead as independent lives as possible through having their own homes and a wide range of activities that supported people to develop their interests and participate in community activities.
