During a routine inspection

We spoke with 12 people, and six staff. People's privacy, dignity and independence was respected. We observed this and people told us that their privacy was protected.

People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan.

People spoken with told us they felt safe in the home and we saw that there was accessible information on this on the notice boards to help prompt people to raise concerns. People told us they were very happy with the activities and one person told us "I like to do lots of things like going to art galleries, charity shops and out for tea". Another person told us about a planned holiday they were going on.

All of the units of the home were neat, clean and free from offensive odours. Bathrooms, showers and toilets were clean.

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

There was an effective complaints system available. Comments and complaints people made were responded to appropriately. People told us they were happy with the outcome of any complaint.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who live at the home. They both confirmed that their privacy and dignity was maintained at all times and that staff always knocked on the door before entering their rooms. People told us that their choices were respected, for example, what activities they chose to join in. One told us that the home was 'a nice place'.

We spoke with two relatives, both of whom always visited unannounced. They told us that the privacy and dignity of their relatives was maintained at all times. We observed that people's own space, such as their bedroom, was respected and staff did not enter without permission. One relative said that the care given was 'first rate' and that people were safe living at the home. Another relative told us that the provision of social activities was of a high standard and that staff were 'very positive'. All the relatives felt that any complaints or suggestions they made to staff would be listened to, but had none to make. They told us that they felt part of the process of caring for their relatives and that staff knew the importance of this.

To help us understand the experience of people using the service, we used our Short Observation Framework for Inspection tool (SOFI). This allowed us to spend time watching what was going on in a service and to record how people spent their time, the support they got and whether or not they had positive experiences. Using this, we found that staff had the necessary time and skills to care for people well.

During a routine inspection

People's communication needs meant that we had limited discussions with people about their life at the home. We also spoke to relatives of some of the people living at the home.

People told us that they like living at the home and, in particular, the day time activities they attend at the work project, which is on the same site as the home. People told us that they valued the activities and work they take part in. One person told us how much he/she enjoys working outside in the orchard and has specific jobs that mean a lot to him/her. We were also told that a number of external activities are attended such as rock concerts, day trips, holidays and meetings with family members.

People told us that they are consulted about how they spend their time and that they have a choice of what they would like to do. It was clear from discussions with people that they were involved in meetings with staff to discuss their needs and preferences. We were also told that house meetings take place where people discuss matters such as forthcoming holiday plans.

People confirmed that they are able to develop independent living skills and that the home has a range of accommodation facilities to meet people's differing needs.
