How this check was done

Our judgement

The provider was meeting this standard. People who use the services have their needs met by an appropriate person.

User experience

People who used the services at St Lukes Care Home have a diagnosis of dementia and other age related conditions. This meant it was difficult for people to give their verbal opinions about the service they received. We spoke with people living at the home; we looked at people’s records and how people interacted with the staff. General observations were made throughout the visit and we had discussions with staff and visiting relatives to obtain their views.

We spoke with six relatives and visitors who told us what it was like at the home and how staff provided the care and support. Relatives and visitors we spoke with made the following comments:

“The manager is great.”

“I wouldn’t hesitate to talk with someone if I had any concerns.”

“You only have to say and they will do whatever to put it right.”

“If I have any problems I would see the staff and they will sort it out.”

Other evidence

The manager was recently employed at St Lukes on 1st May 2012. She has had many years experience in the care of older people.

The manager is yet to be registered with the Commission; however she confirmed with us that her application is in the process of being sent to the Commission for approval.

We spoke with relatives, staff and visitors who provided us with positive comments regarding improvements, which have taken place since her appointment.

Staff told us: “The manager is very supportive. I had supervision yesterday and came out feeling very positive.”

“The new manager has fresh ideas and is very approachable.”

“I hope the new manager stays as we need consistency.”

“The feedback from staff and visitors has been very positive since the recent changes. It is great to have a new manager.”

“The manager is very supportive and things are improving.”

Since the managers recent appointment she has involved the people who used the service and the staff in meetings and supervision sessions, which has enabled them to be kept up to date and involved in new developments.
