During a routine inspection

We talked with people who lived at the home, we used a number of different ways to help us understand everyone's experiences. This was because some people had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us about their experiences.

We looked at care plans. We spoke with the manager and staff who were supporting people, and we observed how they provided that support. People were given support to make choices and decisions for themselves wherever they could do so, and staff clearly understood each person's way of communicating their needs, wishes and choices.

We saw that people had a good rapport with staff and appeared to be comfortable and confident when interacting with them. Where they were able to people told us things like, 'I'm really happy here', and 'Staff are really good.'

Staff told us they would support people who used the service to raise a concern or complaint with the manager and they would be confident that the manager would manage the concern appropriately.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us they were happy living at the home and could do what they liked to do. They said they got on well with staff. Comments included:

'Very happy here thank you.'

'I like the staff and my key worker.'

'I am settling in well.'

We saw that people who use the service were comfortable with staff and had a good rapport with them. It was clear that staff knew the people they were supporting very well.

We saw that care practices were good. Staff were kind and supportive to people, they treated people as individuals. However, we did note that on one occasion staff spoke without regard for a person's dignity. We discussed this with the senior staff member at the time of our visit and were assured that this would be addressed.

Staff gave good examples of how people are treated with dignity and respect. They said they make sure care is carried out in private with discretion and sensitivity. They said they respect people's choices and always explain things properly to people.

People said they had enough to do and enjoyed the activity at the home. One person told us of a dancing class they went to. Another told us they went to a day centre. We saw from records that people can choose what activities to get involved in. Staff respect people's choice to decline activities, for example, if they don't feel like going out. People said they enjoyed helping out in the house. Comments included:

'I like to do the dishwasher and make my own drinks.'

'I get my clothes out and put them away myself.'

We saw that people were encouraged to be as independent as possible. People told us they liked to 'See to my own bedroom.'

Staff said they had a good team who worked well together. They said the home was well managed and the manager worked alongside them. They said the manager was a good leader. Comments included:

'She leads by example, always shows she cares.'
