Good

Updated 12 January 2026

Date of Assessment: 2 February 2026 to 2 April 2026.

Chilton Care Centre is a care home which provides accommodation and personal care for up to 40 older people, including people who are living with dementia. At the time of our assessment, 40 people were using the service.

During the last inspection in February of 2017 the service was rated good. This assessment was undertaken due to the time since our last inspection of the service.

People were supported by a consistent staff team who were familiar with their care and support needs and preferences. Safe staffing levels were in place and staff felt supported by the management team. Recruitment processes were in place, but appropriate risk assessments had not always been completed. Action was taken to address this. Staff told us they felt supported by the management team. Where concerns about staffs’ performance had been raised, action had been taken but records relating to this required further improvements.

People felt safe living at the service. Whilst action had been taken to safeguard people and reduce risks, appropriate referrals had not always been made. The registered manager took immediate action to address this.

Regular and robust checks were in place to ensure a safe environment was maintained. Infection, prevention and control measures were in place and followed by staff. Work was planned to ensure the laundry facilities followed best practice guidance.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives. Staff provided support in the least restrictive way and in line with people’s best interests. Policies and systems within the service promoted and upheld this practice.

People received care from dedicated, compassionate and well‑trained staff. Care records were reviewed regularly to ensure they were current and reflective of people’s needs. Staff worked effectively with external healthcare professionals to ensure people received timely support. There were some gaps in records where people required additional monitoring to maintain their health, but this had not impacted on people.

The provider had oversight systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service. Feedback was sought regularly from people, relatives and staff. The registered manager and staff team were committed to promoting positive outcomes for the people they supported.

People were happy living at Chilton Care Centre and spoke positively about the support they received. Comments included, “The care is brilliant”, “They (staff) are kind. They treat me with respect” and “I’ve been here a year. I love it. The cleanliness, the food, the staff are out of this world.”

We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI), which helps us understand the experiences of people who are unable to communicate with us directly.

Observations showed people were comfortable with staff and knew people well including their likes, dislikes and preferences. We observed warm, caring interactions between people and staff. One relative told us, “They know just how [person’s name] likes things, such as airing off their pyjamas on the radiator.”

People told us they were fully involved in their care and support. We observed staff seeking consent and encouraging people to make day to day decisions where possible. Relatives told us they were kept informed and included in discussions. One relative said, “They fully involve me. I make suggestions and I feel involved.”

People and relatives told us they were able to make their own day to day decisions where possible, and staff were skilled at helping people maintain their independence. We observed staff offering people choice and encouraging them to do things for themselves. Comments included, “They encourage [person’s name] with choices. He picks his own food, and they always ask him first” and “[Person’s name] has as many showers as he wants. They always ask if he wants a bath or shower and he chooses.”

People told us they enjoyed the activities on offer and staff kept them informed of any activities being provided. People enjoyed spending time with staff, chatting about their life histories and past times. One person said, “I can have a good laugh with staff.”

People and relatives were fully aware of how to raise any concerns or complaints. All people and relatives we spoke with provided positive feedback with regards to the registered manager and management team. Comments included, “You would be pushed to get anyone better than [registered manager’s name]” and “I think it is really well managed. It is as good as you can get.”
