They understand [relative’s] needs and always make sure [relative] comfortable.”
Staff were knowledgeable about people's individual routines, personalities and likes and dislikes. A health care professional told us, “I genuinely can't say enough good things about the staff, especially the nursing team. Independence, choice and control
People’s independence, rights and choice were supported ensuring control over their care, treatment and wellbeing. One person told us they enjoyed the food and chose from the menu. They said they were offered tea and coffee frequently during the day and appreciated the caring attitude of the staff, commenting they bring a hot chocolate in the evening which they didn’t even have to ask for. The registered manager told us they were in the process of recruiting a wellbeing lead and an activities carer. Care staff were currently facilitating activities for people at the service. We observed staff and people participating in a sing along activity. During the 2nd day of our assessment, we observed a Church service that was well attended by people.
Staff spoke of the musical engagement and of therapeutic activities. Regular singing sessions were held and encourage social interaction and cognitive stimulation. External specialists visited the service regularly to conduct exercise classes, ensuring people-maintained mobility and physical health in a safe, supervised environment.
We saw activities planned for the week of our visit. Activities on offer to people included a St Patricks Day celebration, nail spa, music session, balloon games, planting seeds, Thursday morning worship, nutrition and hydration day celebration, a coffee morning, arts and crafts and Sunday worship. A relative told us, “Staff enable celebrations on people’s birthdays, with birthday cake, balloons up and a nice crowd.”
There was a secure garden at the back of the home with suitable furniture that people could enjoy in warm weather. During warmer months, we noted staff organised outdoor social gatherings where people enjoyed non-alcoholic cocktails and refreshments in a convivial atmosphere.
