During a routine inspection

We looked at the care records for three people who used the service. The records included risk assessments and plans of care for staff to follow. The care plans were reviewed every six months or more frequently if the person's care needs changed. We saw people's records contained information about the ways people preferred their care to be provided. People told us the provider was very responsive if they requested a change in a visit time or a staff member. This meant that people had a choice about the service they received.

We spoke with three care support staff who clearly described their safeguarding responsibilities. Staff training records showed that training in safeguarding was introduced during induction and updated for all staff. Safeguarding was also discussed during supervision. One staff member told us 'I would have no hesitation in reporting all concerns to my manager. I know they would be taken seriously'. These measures meant the staff were aware of the steps they should take to protect people from the risk of abuse.

During a routine inspection

Inter-County Nursing and Care Services supply care workers to approximately 40-45 individual people in their own homes. The service provides help and support to meet people's individual needs.

At this inspection we spoke with the operational director, the manager, five members of staff, four people who use the service of Inter-county Nursing and Care Services and one of their relatives.

We visited four people in their own homes and talked to them about the care they received from Inter-county Nursing and Care Services.

One person we spoke with told us 'the girls are lovely, always friendly and very caring'. Another person told us ' I'm relaxed with all the staff and I can talk to them about anything, they always treat me with respect'.

We found that care plans accurately reflected people's needs and had been drawn up with their involvement.

People were supported by staff who had received the correct training to deliver personal care safely and to an appropriate standard.

People told us their visits were conducted on time and they never felt rushed. They told us the care workers took the time to make sure they were comfortable and had everything they needed before they left.

Staff we spoke with told us they felt well supported by the management team and stated the training they received was very thorough and updated when required.

During a routine inspection

We spoke, by telephone, to three people who received care and with two relatives.

People we spoke with told us that staff were polite and courteous. They felt their views and preferences were listened to and taken into account. People told us they were happy with the care provided. One person commented 'without exception staff are cheerful, helpful, considerate and courteous both to Mum and to us'.

We heard the office-based staff talking in a respectful, caring and unhurried manner on the phone to people calling in with queries or requests. The staff we spoke with described how they respected people and took their views and preferences into account when delivering care. Staff told us that they had received support and encouragement from the registered manager to undertake further training.
