Our view of the service

The hospital has an inpatient ward with capacity to accommodate 25 patients, 24 hours per day, seven days week. The day case unit consists of a surgical admissions unit with 3 individual bays and a separate day case ward with capacity to accommodate 8 patients in individual pod bays. The surgical facilities include three operating theatres with laminar flow and a separate endoscopy / minor procedures theatre with a dedicated endoscopy decontamination suite.

We commenced a responsive assessment of the surgery service on 28 February 2025 because of concerns identified in Statutory Notifications and contact cases. We carried out an unannounced inspection on 13 March 2025 and looked at the three key questions for safe, effective and well-led.

Through the assessment of these three key questions since the last inspection, our overall rating for the surgery service stayed the same. We rated it as good. We only inspected the surgery service on this occasion and the current rating of good for outpatient and diagnostic services remains as good from our last inspection in 2023.

During the inspection, we spoke with staff, leaders, people who use the service and service partners. We looked at care records, policies and other documents relating to the service.

We did not identify any regulatory breaches at this inspection.

We found the service had enough suitably trained staff who protected people from abuse and managed safety incidents well. They managed medicines and had systems to identify and prevent surgical site infections.

Staff assessed people's health needs, and worked well together as a team. Most people experienced positive outcomes following surgery.

Leaders understood the key risks to the service and promoted a positive work culture.

The service had an effective process for carrying out checks on company directors, in line with regulatory requirements for fit and proper persons; directors.
