All Inspections

9 April 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who used the service. They told us they were happy with the service they received. One person told us: 'The whole procedure was explained and what the kind of outcome would be'. Another person said: 'I'm extremely happy. Really impressed. They looked after me so well'

We were told staff were respectful and kind. Comments received included: 'They were very kind and considerate' and 'They were very welcoming and put me at my ease'.

We last inspected the service on 5 December 2012 and found moderate concerns relating to infection control, staff training and staff appraisal systems. We also found minor concerns that the provider did not have adequate systems in place to deal with emergencies. During our inspection on 9 April 2013 we found the provider had addressed all of these concerns.

People were provided with safe and effective treatment and support. There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment that was suitably designed and adequately maintained.

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

People's personal records including medical records were accurate and fit for purpose. Records were kept securely and could be located promptly when needed.

5 December 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service. People told us they were happy with the service they had received. They said, 'I was very impressed. I was bowled over by the surgeon's attitude; I didn't feel rushed at all'. And, 'Caring but professional at the same time. They get 10 stars from me'.

We found that the Castlefield Clinic provided people who used the service with appropriate information and support in relation to their treatment. Treatment was provided in a way that maintained people's privacy and dignity and was based around their needs.

We last inspected the service on 7 March 2012 and found moderate concerns relating to the pre-admission checks completed by the provider. We also had moderate concerns that relevant employment checks were not being completed to ensure staff were fit for practice. We found the provider had addressed these concerns and they were meeting the required standards.

At the last inspection we found some moderate concerns relating to infection control, staff training and staff appraisal systems. Whilst the provider had since addressed some of these concerns, we found they had not addressed all of them. The provider could not show that all staff had received appropriate training and appraisal. We found there wasn't a suitable system in place for ensuring that items past their expiry date were disposed of in a timely manner. We also had some concerns relating to the effective cleaning of the theatre.

During a routine inspection

Due to the nature of the services provided at Castlefield Clinic we were only able to speak to one person using the service during our visit. This person told us they were completely happy with the standard of their care. They said they had been provided with sufficient information about the procedure they were having. They were happy with the pre-operative consultation process. They said all the staff they had seen seemed well trained and competent. They said: "It's been great - I had a couple of questions and someone always came straight back to me." We also reviewed the provider's recent patient survey results and saw that the provider had received very positive feedback from people in relation to all aspects of the service.
