Our current view of the service

Good

Date of assessment: 22 April to 30 April 2026. The assessment was triggered due to the time since we last inspected the service. At the last assessment the service was rated good. At this assessment the rating remains good.

Elmwood Care Home is a care home providing support to older people. At the time of inspection there were 31 people living at the service.

The service had a positive and open culture that supported continuous learning and improvement. Risks were effectively identified, assessed and managed, with robust safeguarding systems in place and appropriate application of legal frameworks. The environment was well maintained, and staffing levels were sufficient to meet people’s needs, ensuring safe and consistent care delivery.

Infection prevention and control processes were embedded in practice, and medicines were generally managed safely. This was supported by systems, audits and oversight, with some areas identified for further strengthening to support consistent practice.

Safe recruitment processes were followed, including appropriate pre-employment checks to ensure staff were suitable to work with vulnerable people. Staff completed a full induction, received regular training, and had ongoing support through supervision This helped them feel confident and competent in their role.

Care was delivered through holistic assessment and in line with evidence-based practice, supported by effective multidisciplinary working. Systems were in place to monitor outcomes and respond promptly to changes in people’s needs, ensuring care remained effective and person-centred.

People experienced a caring and inclusive environment where dignity, independence and wellbeing was promoted. Care was responsive and flexible, with personalised planning that reflected individual preferences, including future and end of life wishes.

Governance arrangements were in place, with clear oversight, regular audits and quality assurance processes driving improvement and sustainability. The service worked in partnership with external professionals and community organisations to support joined-up care and positive outcomes for people.

People's experience of the service

People and their relatives spoke positively about the care and support provided and described the service as safe, caring and responsive to individual needs. Feedback consistently reflected that people felt secure and well supported. One person told us, “This is a wonderful place, safe and calm and just like family, I have no complaints at all.” A relative said, “I absolutely feel [Name] is safe here, the staff are fantastic.”

There was evidence that people and their relatives were involved in care planning and risk management. One relative told us staff worked with them prior to admission and understood their family member’s needs, commenting, “They all know what [Name] needs, and nothing is ever any trouble.”

People described staff as kind, patient and attentive. One person said, “They look after me really well, this is the best place,” while another told us, “The staff are always so caring and helpful.” Relatives also confirmed staff treated people with dignity and respect, particularly when supporting people with complex needs.

There was positive feedback about staffing levels and responsiveness. One person said, “If I press my buzzer they come straight away, they are wonderful.”

People told us they were supported to maintain interests and take part in activities. Comments included, “There is always lots going on,” and “I have been out for fish and chips and to the park.” There was also evidence of meaningful and personalised experiences, including tailored activities and celebrations, which contributed to people’s wellbeing.

People confirmed they could make choices about their daily routines and preferences. One person said, “If I want to rest in my room, that’s fine.”
