Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 28 January 2026

Date of assessment: 03 March 2026 to 24 March 2026. We visited the care home on 03 and 05 March 2026.

Clarendon House is a nursing home providing personal and nursing care for up to 65 people. At the time of the assessment there were 38 people living at the service. People’s bedrooms were housed over 3 floors, all accessed by a lift. All bedrooms were en-suite, with some benefitting from a large open plan room which had a lounge area in addition to the bed. A fourth floor housed a leisure suite which included, a cinema room, hairdressing and spa areas in addition to a roof top garden and social area. The home had many small lounge areas where people could sit. Two café areas were available to people and their relatives.

The service was registered in March 2022. This is the first inspection since registration and was planned to check overall compliance and safety of the home.

People were routinely treated with dignity and respect. Staff had been recruited safely and were able to support people to keep safe. Staff were trained in key areas relevant to their role within the home, for instance, nursing staff had skills in wound care.

People were supported with their prescribed medicines and referred to external healthcare professionals in a timely manner. People’s healthcare needs were met, and the home had a good relationship with external healthcare providers.

People were supported to engage in meaningful activities and maintain their role in society. There was a strong emphasis on community engagement.

The registered manager of the service was respected by people, their relatives and staff. People received personalised care and they were able to make their bedroom homely.

We highlighted some areas where the provider and registered manager could make improvements. For instance, in ensuring records were accurate and ensuring food items were in date.

People's experience of the service

Updated 28 January 2026

We spent time speaking with people while at the service and contacted relatives after the site visit to seek feedback. People and relatives were unanimous in their feedback regarding how safe they felt. Comments included, “very safe” and “90 per cent safe”. People and their relatives described staff as attentive and caring, and said how staff responded and supported them contributed to them feeling safe. Where people raised concerns with us, these were typically about staffing levels at certain times, access to call bells, or occasional disturbances caused by other people entering their bedrooms at night.

Feedback from people and relatives on staffing varied. Some relatives stated there were “plenty of staff” during the week but fewer visible at weekends. Others said staff could sometimes be difficult to find. While people generally felt safe, several commented that staffing levels affected response times, particularly at busier times of day. People felt staff were friendly and caring, though some concerns were raised about the experience level of newer staff. People told us the staff worked well as a team.

We have provided feedback to the registered manager about what people said about staff and our own observations about the deployment of staff.

People and their relatives told us staff were kind and caring, comments included, “I honestly think they are caring people”, “All the carers I come across here are all nice girls and ladies” and “wonderful and caring.”

Feedback from people and relatives indicated people felt listened to and involved in decisions about their care. We were provided with examples of staff seeking and acting on people’s views. Relatives described being fully involved in care planning discussions, especially since the registered manager had been in post.

Leadership was viewed positively in terms of openness and approachability. People and their relatives told us they could speak with the registered manager and/or deputy manager at any time and felt their views would be taken seriously.

We discussed some areas of improvement identified from people and their relatives with the manager and provider. They were responsive to our feedback.
