During an inspection looking at part of the service

This location is owned and managed by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. The location is registered to provide accommodation and personal care to a maximum of 35 people. Five places are provided for people who need respite care. This type of care is provided for a short time to enable carers go on holiday or to have a break.

Care provided is mainly for older people who have a diagnosis of dementia. At the time of our inspection visit there were 25 people living at the location.

We spent the day observing people, their routines and interactions with staff. We spoke with four people living at the location. People indicated that they were happy with the care they received from the staff. Below are a few examples of what people told us;

'Yes I like it here. The staff are good'.

'I have been here for a while now, it is nice'.

'I really like it here'.

One person who was receiving respite care said; 'I have been here a few times. I like coming here, it is nice'.

We spoke with three visitors who were very complimentary about the care their relative received.

One visitor told us; 'No concerns at all. They (their relative) always seem happy'.

Another visitor told us:' I feel that my relative is well cared for and is safe'.

A recent compliment written by a relative read; 'Great comfort knowing that they are looked after by dedicated and professional staff'.

Staff we spoke with told us that they liked working at the location. One staff member told us; 'I like working here. We work as a team. I know that people are well looked after here'.

Although people were very complimentary about the care provided and the staff we found some areas that need to be improved upon to prevent risk to people. These areas of improvement included care planning and some aspects of medication safety.
