During an inspection looking at part of the service

Our December 2011inspection focussed on medication safety and management. We spent our inspection time in the treatment room where the medication was stored. We did not speak with people during this inspection.

In September 2011 we inspected this location and found that there was non compliance with one of essential outcome areas. This essential outcome area concerned medication safety and management.

We carried out this December 2011 inspection to see whether the provider had made improvements in respect of medication safety and management. We found that improvement had been made regarding the temperature medication is stored at however; medication recording processes were still insufficient.

12 September 2011

During a routine inspection

The location is owned and managed by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. It is registered to provide accommodation and personal care to a maximum of 47 older people who have a variety of conditions including dementia. Predominately care provided is for assessment and rehabilitation purposes. Generally people only receive care for a maximum of six weeks then they return home to live independently or move to a new placement which can meet their long term needs. At the time of our inspection there were 35 people living at the location.

We spent the day observing people, their routines and interactions with staff. We spoke to six people living at the location. People indicated that they were happy with the care they received from the location.

Below are a few examples of what they said to us;

'They all look after me well. They care for me'.

'I love them (the staff), the staff are very nice'.

'They are very kind. It is like my home'.

'The staff are excellent, very friendly and polite'.

'It's a happy place'.

The staff team were happy in their work and were committed to provide a good service to the people who live at this location. Staff told us;

'I do like it here. Every day is busy but it is rewarding'.

'I like to see people being able to return home and live independently. 91% of people who come to us for rehabilitation are able to return to their own homes.'

We found that medication processes need some improvement to prevent risk to people. Care plans did not reflect some people's needs. More robust processes should be put into place to monitor these areas of care to prevent shortfalls occurring like those we identified during our inspection.
