During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we visited the service in October 2011 we identified three areas of concern. People did not always receive care in they way they preferred and that people's needs were not fully met. People with dementia were not provided with suitable stimulation. Staffing levels were not adjusted to meet the needs of people. We revisited on 10 July 2012 to check compliance against these issues.

St Johns Care Home has two floors. The first floor is used for people who have dementia and need greater support.

We spent time on both the ground floor and first floor. We spoke with four people using the service, two relatives and three members of staff. We completed a Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI) on each floor. SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk to us.

We could see there were good relationships between people using the service and members of staff. People in the ground floor lounge appeared to be happy and relaxed in their surroundings. We asked one person if they were happy with their care, they said, 'I'm quite happy here.'

In the upstairs lounge where people needed more support we saw some of the people were less settled due to their illness. Although the provider had tried to provide increased stimulation for people changes, within the staff team meant this had not been maintained.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with several people who told us they are satisfied with the care they receive.

One person said 'I have lived here for 15 years and I get on alright. The food is good and the staff are nice, it's a lovely place.'

Another person told us 'the staff are good here, I think they look after you well. I have no complaints, everything is good.'

A relative said 'It's the best you can get here. I would move here myself. I have no complaints. I am able to visit whenever I want and the staff are very kind.'
