During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with a number of people that used the service and their families. They told us that care and welfare of people had improved since the service had taken on a new manager. Family members told us that the new service manager monitors care and staff practice more robustly than what was in place previously. They felt happy to speak with him to report any concerns or worries they had with their relatives care. Family members told us they thought the service had improved in terms of cleanliness.

During an inspection in response to concerns

There were some positive feedback given by people that use this service, referred to in this report as residents and one family member about how well they had been cared for.

We were told by a family member that improvements that had been made since our last visit had not been sustained and actions as described to them at the 'residents and relatives meeting' had not been delivered in full.

Family members told us before this review that they were not receiving satisfactory or timely responses to the complaints that they had made.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We were told by people who use the service and their visiting relatives that there had been improvements to the cleanliness and tidiness of the home since our last visit in March 2011. We saw that the management team had held a 'residents and relatives' meeting in June 2011 and the minutes show positive comments given by family members and people who use the service for this development.

Some visiting relatives told us that staff were 'more attentive' since our last review in March 2011. Positive comments were given on the dementia care unit and many people told us that they felt well cared for and that staff were 'nice and friendly'.

Relatives told us that staffing levels had increased in the dementia care unit, however we were told by two visiting relatives that staff were often struggling to care for people during the breakfast and early morning period within the general care unit.
