12 February 2016

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection on 12 and 16 February 2016. The inspection was unannounced.

We last inspected this home in January 2014. At that inspection we found the service was meeting all of the regulations that we assessed.

Risedale at St Georges Nursing Home provides accommodation for up to 51 people who need personal and nursing care. Accommodation is provided on two floors and there is a passenger lift to help people to access the first floor. All bedrooms are single with ensuite toilets. The home has a range of equipment suitable to meet the needs of people living there. The service shares a site with Risedale at Lonsdale Nursing Home, close to the centre of Barrow-in-Furness. There were 49 people living in the home at the time of this inspection.

There was a registered manager employed at the home. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act and associated Regulations about how the service is run.

Everyone we spoke with told us that this was a good service. People said the staff were kind, caring and skilled. There were enough staff on duty, with the appropriate skills and qualifications, to provide people with the support they required.

Visitors were made welcome in the home and people could see their friends and family as they wanted.

People were provided with a range of activities that they enjoyed. The activities were planned to take account of people’s preferences.

The staff knew the people they were supporting and treated them in a respectful but friendly way. People were included in decisions about their care and their choices were respected.

People were safe because risks had been identified and managed. All the staff in the home had completed training to give them the skills and knowledge to carry out their roles and to ensure people in the home were safe.

People knew the registered manager and how they could contact her if they wished.

The registered provider and registered manager had good processes in place to monitor the quality of the service. People were asked for their views and these were used to further improve the quality of the service provided.

People told us this was a good home and said they were happy living there. They told us the staff in the home supported them to retain their independence and control over their lives.

People made many positive comments about the staff employed in the home. They said they felt the staff were well trained and said they received the support they needed at the time they needed it.

People told us they had no complaints about the service or the support they received. They said they knew how they could raise a concern if they were not happy about anything.

We spoke with some people who were frequent visitors to the home. They said they had never noticed anything that concerned them when they visited this service.

The staff we spoke with said they had completed a range of training to give them the skills and knowledge to provide the support individuals required. They raised no concerns about the service and told us, 'People are really well cared for here' and said, 'This is a really good home, I'd recommend it to my own Mum'.

People told us,

'I'm very happy with the service',

'We're very well looked after here, you couldn't fault it',

'There are always staff about, I like that. At night it's good to know there is someone there when you need them, that was one of the best things about moving here, knowing there is always someone there',

And said, 'I love it here, I wouldn't change anything'.

Everyone we spoke with told us they were happy living at Risedale at St Georges. People told us they made choices about their lives and the support they received. They said they felt safe living in the home and told us they enjoyed the activities provided. Everyone we spoke with told us the staff who worked in the home knew the support they needed and provided this as they required. People said the staff were 'very kind' and told us 'they're a grand bunch'.

People told us,

'I like it here',

'I'm alright, I've got no complaints' and said,

'They let you do what you want, I choose to stay in my room and that's fine with them.'

Many people who lived in the home were not able to easily express their views or wishes about the support they received. We observed people in communal areas in the home to assess how they were supported by staff. We saw that people were treated with consideration and respect and given choices about their lives in a way they could understand. Staff were patient, friendly and considerate while supporting people and gave them the time they needed to express their wishes.
