During a routine inspection

Many people using the service were unable to tell us their views due to cognitive impairment or dementia. However we observed good staff interactions with people, and when we spoke with staff they knew the needs of the people they supported.

During our visit to Mountdale Nursing Home we saw people taking part in activities as a group in the lounge, and also someone who were confined to bed playing dominoes with activity staff in their room. Where possible people were given the opportunity to be as involved or separate as they wanted to be. For example, we saw that people were able to choose whether they wanted to eat their meals in the lounge sitting in armchairs, or at the table, or in their room.

We spoke with two people who confirmed that staff called them by their prefered name, maintained their dignity during personal care activities, and if they required assistance it was given in an appropriate amount of time. One relative we spoke with commented that they had chosen Mountdale Nursing Home because it had a nice feel to it and was not too big. Another relative told us that staff were "very good, very helpful."

People with whom we spoke confirmed that they were respected and involved by staff. They confirmed that they felt happy in the home and if they required any assistance staff would respond promptly. They were generally satisfied with the care and treatment provided by staff and felt able to approach staff if they had any concerns and were confident that these would be addressed appropriately.

A visitor with whom we spoke confirmed that they were pleased with the care and attention provided for their relative who was living in this home and that if they had any concerns about the care being provided they felt able to approach staff and were confident that any issues would be addressed appropriately. They were confident that their relative was receiving their medications and other treatment in a safe and effective manner. They felt that there were sufficient staff on duty to meet the needs of the people who were receiving care and accommodation in this home.
