Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

We observed staff supporting people in a respectful and considerate way. People were assisted with personal care, nutrition and mobility with staff offering reassurance and kindness.

A person told us, “I can’t criticise, they are wonderful. Staff are so friendly and nice.”

Relatives told us the staff are caring and kind. A relative told us, “I think they are a lovely team, and the staff seem genuinely caring”.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Staff knew people well and delivered care which reflected their individual needs, routines and preferences. People were supported in ways in which suited them, and staff adapted their approach to supporting each person as an individual.

People felt that they were supported well by staff. A person told us, “They treat me well and they know me very well, they always listen to me.”

A relative told us, “Most definitely. They’re always asking [person] about what [person] wants and [person] likes.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People told us that they were happy with how they were supported by staff. A person told us, “They know me very well.” Relatives told us that the staff knew their loved ones and ensured that they were supported with making choices.

Care plans we saw identified people’s likes and dislikes and were routinely reviewed.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff responded to people’s needs in a timely manner during our inspection and we saw referrals had been made to healthcare professionals regarding people’s changing health needs. Feedback we received from staff, relatives and people did not raise any concerns regarding staffing levels at Brooklyn House nursing home.

A relative told us,” There always seem enough staff to me. They seem well structured. I trust them 100%.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us that they felt supported by the leadership team and that they were treated respectfully and encouraged to develop their skills. A staff member told us, “We have continuous learning which helps me to develop and gain new skills.”

Staff received regular supervisions and attended team meetings.
