' They seem very happy. It all seems ok.

' It's lovely food here.

' I have my own room and I can't complain about anything, it's fine for me and always warm enough.

' Staff are very kind to me. They are always nice to everyone and some people need a lot more help than me.

Staff told us that people receive a good service, are treated with respect and can make decisions about their care. Staff said there is enough staff working at the home and they know how to care for the people who live there. Staff said the meals were very good and people always have enough to eat. They said the home is well maintained and any problems are dealt with promptly. Staff made the following comments:

' It's important to follow the person not the routine.

' Very good meals, we have a great cook.

' Meals are good quality, fresh vegetables, home cooking and baking.

' It's good quality training. We have booklets for our induction. We do 1' days at the start of our induction, then shadow senior staff for one week, and do more induction in detail later.

' We talk about how people like things being done and about individual needs.

We received some positive feedback from health and social care professionals and they made the following comments:

' None of the staff here (Healthcare team office) have any particular concerns and are always happy to deal with the nursing home staff.

' Staff have always been helpful and referred timely and appropriately to the service.

' People with dementia need support staff which is always available. The nurses know the people who live there, if I ask any questions, they know the answers. They know what is happening to people.

' Staff share information and will follow up any recommendations. I do not have any concerns.

' I have a good opinion of Sunningdale.

A new manager had started working at the home and she discussed how they are going to develop the service. She said that the service has a good staff team who are well meaning although they have identified a number of areas where they can improve the service, which includes care practices, care planning and general recording. The manager said she is putting together a training package that will help increase staff's knowledge and understanding in these areas. The manager confirmed that they were reviewing the menus and would be looking at making sure meal options are based on people's likes and preferences. She said they have introduced smoothies and jellies, and would be offering fresh fruit and better quality tea and coffee. They were also putting together a programme to refurbish the home.
