During a routine inspection

In this report the name Yana Whitehouse appears as a registered manager. At the time of our inspection they were no longer in post or managing regulated activities at the location.

During our inspection there were eight people who used the service. Prior to our inspection we reviewed information received from the provider. As part of our inspection we spoke with one person who used the service, two staff members and the registered manager. We used observation to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service as some had communication needs which meant they were not all able to tell us their experiences. We gained the views of two relatives. We observed support given by staff to people who used the service. We also looked at records and carried out a tour of the building.

We found that where people did not have capacity to consent to their care the provider had acted in accordance with legal requirements and people received care and support which met their needs. A relative told us, 'They do so much, they are always going out.'

People were protected against the risk of abuse. The provider had a safeguarding policy and procedure in place.

We found the needs of the people who used the service were met by sufficient numbers of appropriately skilled staff. A relative of a person who used the service said of the staff, 'They are really helpful, they get involved.'

There were systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of service provided.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences.

We observed two people enjoying baking cakes in the kitchen. One person showed us their room and another person was enjoying listening to music in the main lounge. All of these people were independent around the home and taking part in their chosen activities, with staff support. Everyone appeared happy and relaxed.

One person told us they liked doing needlepoint and another person told us they liked listening to music.

People who used the service were receiving safe quality care, treatment and support, due to effective decision making and the management of risks to their health, welfare and safety.

During an inspection in response to concerns

On the day of our visit to Redcliffe House there were 8 people living at Redcliffe House.

People who live at Redcliffe House told us they were happy there and well looked after by caring staff. There were plenty of opportunities for activities and outings, including an annual holiday.

We spoke with four people who live at Redcliffe House and we were told that: 'It's alright here, I like it.' 'It's good, the staff are OK.' 'Sometimes I get upset, but the staff help me, and then I'm alright.' 'I do like living here, yes, I do.'

Redcliffe House have a 'training kitchen' where people have 'cook and eat' sessions on a one to one basis with a member of staff. The manager told us that sometimes families are invited and they share a meal which their relative has chosen and helped to cook.

One person told us that they like Lady Ga Ga (the pop singer.) They had a Lady Ga Ga tribute act to their birthday party, and proudly showed us the photographs.
