During a routine inspection

People using the services Longford (and their visitors) told us that they were treated with respect, were being cared for and supported properly and that their accommodation was of a comfortable standard. Comments made included;

'All the staff here treat me properly, they are polite and considerate and I am very happy with them.'

'I have no complaints about the way I have been treated. I am able to make choices and decisions myself and all the staff respect me.'

'The care I have had is second to none. My health has really improved since I came here. If you are ill they get the doctor out to you quickly.'

'I have nothing but praise about how my [relative] has been cared for here. If there is any change the staff keep me informed about what is happening and seek my views too.'

'The care here is the best I have seen, and I have visited a lot of these places [care homes] over the years.'

We found that people were being cared for in a suitable environment by adequate numbers of appropriately trained staff. The provider was making suitable checks to monitor the quality and safety of the services provided

During a routine inspection

People living at the home told us that the quality of care provided to their relative was generally very good, that the food provided was good and that the home was kept clean. Regular visitors to the home told us that on the whole the care and support provided was very good and that the home communicated effectively and appropriately with them. However they did express the view that at times the number of care support staff on duty was not sufficient. Comments made included;

'All the staff are very pleasant, and nothing is too much trouble for them.'

'Sometimes when it is very busy you have to wait a long time but they (the staff) are really kind and the help they give me is really good.'

'The care the staff provides is of a high standard. But I don't think there are enough staff in the mornings. The staff try their best but they do have to rush and I think that must have an impact on all the residents not just my relative.'

'I think the care at Longford is really very good. My (relative) has been really well looked after and the staff make sure they see the doctor when they are not well. They also tell me about any changes to the health of my relative.'

Care staff at the home told us that staffing levels were not always sufficient to fully meet the needs of residents at all times. All described the increasing number of residents and levels of their dependency as significant factors contributing to the pressure on staffing levels in the home.
