During a routine inspection

People told us they were happy with the care and treatment they received whilst living at The Dell.

One person told us: 'I'm very satisfied with my care. They [staff] can't do enough for me."

Another person said: 'We are very well looked after. I'm happy to be here.'

We found that people's consent to care was always discussed and obtained prior to care being provided. If there were concerns about a person's capacity to consent to receiving care then advice would be sought from the relevant professional who had responsibility for making the decision which would include an assessment of people's mental capacity.

We found that people received good care and treatment. We saw that people received their medication regularly and medication was stored and administered in a safe way.

We saw that the registered provider had a number of systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service it provided so as to ensure a consistent standard of care was delivered to people who used the service.

We saw that people's care records were detailed and personalised and instructed staff in how to meet people's care needs.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with a number of people who lived in the home, three visiting relatives and looked at the care files of six people who lived at The Dell. We spoke with care staff and spent time observing routines and staff interaction with people.

People told us they were satisfied with the care they received. One person said. 'The staff really look after us. If I'm ill they get the doctor out'. Another person said 'I'm well looked after'.

We had concerns about the standard of fire safety at the home in relation to the kitchen area. We discussed this with the registered manager who took action to make the kitchen area safe for people who lived and visited The Dell. Visitors to the home told us the home was always clean and comfortable.

People who lived at the home told us they felt safe and well cared for. One person said 'The staff are nice and kind to me'.

The home did not have suitable arrangements in place to protect people who lacked capacity.

Storage systems for personal information were inadequate and could lead to people's privacy and dignity being compromised.

During a routine inspection

We visited the home and spent some time chatting with people who live there. People that we spoke with expressed satisfaction with the care they were receiving and spoke highly of carers and managers.

People described staff at the home as kind, patient and caring. One resident we were chatting with pointed to a carer and said 'these lot are all little crackers. '

One resident commented, 'this is the place to be, we want for nothing here.' Another person said 'The girls (staff) here are gems, they can't do enough for you.'

Some people were not able to make specific comments about life at the home. However we noted that everyone we met looked relaxed and content in their surroundings and appeared comfortable in the presence of carers.

People that we spoke with were aware of their care plans and what they contained. We asked people if they felt their care plans included things that were important to them personally. Everyone we spoke with felt this was the case. One resident said 'They do anything I want, nothing is too much trouble.'

A number of people we spoke with commented favourably on the activities programme at the home. 'I do more here than I have ever done,' said one resident. Another commented 'We go out to some lovely places,' whilst showing us some pictures of a recent trip out.

We asked residents about the quality and variety of food provided at the home and received some very positive feedback. Everyone we spoke with expressed satisfaction with their meals. One resident joked, 'it's not good for your waistline living here! There's too much good stuff!'

People told us that they found the staff and manager approachable and said they would be happy to raise any concerns they had. People were also confident that any concern they did raise would be dealt with properly. One resident said 'I think they would want to know about any problems so they could put them right.'
