During an inspection in response to concerns

We undertook this inspection in response to anonymous concerns we received. The concerns related to: insufficient staffing, staff not being qualified to administer medication, lack of fire training and inadequate personal care. We reviewed records, spoke with the manager, staff and people living at The Hawthorns. We found no evidence to substantiate the concerns. People living at the service told us that: " staff are excellent and know what support I need". People also told us that " there were always enough staff working during the day and night and that they sit and spend time talking with me".

This review found that the manager had kept under review staffing skills, numbers and training to ensure that there are sufficient staff with the appropriate skills and knowledge at all times. Staff had received, on a regular basis, sufficient training to ensure that the welfare of people using the service was protected. The personal care needs of people had been assessed and kept under review by staff who understood and respected their needs.

In summary, this inspection found no evidence to substantiate the concerns raised and that The Hawthorns was providing a good standard of care to people living at the home.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people living at the home. All said that they were very happy living in the home. There was a lively atmosphere in the home, with lots of laughter and friendly banter between people and staff. People told us that they were able to make choices about their daily living and how they wished staff to support them. Previous concerns regarding the safeguarding of people living at the home had been addressed. When the inspectors arrived at the home they were advised that the company, which operates the service, had gone into administration. Administrators hoped to sell The Hawthorns and other homes in the group over the coming months. A company has been appointed to oversee the running of the home whilst the administrators try to sell the home. The inspection found no evidence that the administration was impacting on the care provided to the people living at the home.

All said that they were very happy living in the home. There was a lively atmosphere in the home, with lots of laughter and friendly banter between people and staff.

We spoke with eight people who were living in the home. They told us that: 'the food is good' and that 'staff are very good and helpful, they try to sort out problems for us'

During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited the home following a safeguarding incident. This followed an allegation of theft of individuals' money by a member of staff. This is currently being investigated by the police. We have been told that the individual concerned has admitted a number of thefts of people's monies.

We also received information alleging that the environment of the home was poor.

We did not speak directly to individuals about the safeguarding incident and theft of people's money. However we spoke generally to a number of individuals about the care they receive. They told us; "I enjoy living here", "its a lovely home and the staff are all very good".

One person we spoke with was aware of the theft of money. They told us that their affairs were looked after by a relative. Another person was aware that a staff member had left and the reason.
