During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with people using the services but their feedback did not relate to this standard.

At this inspection we checked whether previous shortfalls in the management and maintenance of records had been addressed. These issues had been identified during our last inspection at the service on 9 May 2013. We found improvements had been made and the risks associated with the maintenance of records had been reduced.

People's personal records and staff records were accurate and fit for purpose. Records were kept securely and could be located promptly when needed.

9 May 2013

During a routine inspection

We found that people were asked for consent before care was delivered. Care needs were assessed and care was planned and delivered taking account of risks and people's rights.

We observed that staff were attentive to people who could not communicate easily. For example we saw that a staff member noticed that a person had a pained expression and after observing and talking to them they offered a cup of water and a paracetamol for a headache. A second staff member noted that a person was not drinking well and assisted them with this.

We saw in written comments that visitors were complimentary about the care and one visitor said, "I visit regularly, I am responsible for my sister and I am very happy with the way they care for her. I have no complaints whatsoever. The food is good, the home is pleasant warm and comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone." One of the people, told us," We are very happy, no complaints, it has worked out very well for us."

We found that staff understood how to protect people from harm and were trained and supported to do so.

The provider had arrangements for measuring the quality of the service and identifying where improvements could be made.

The record keeping at the home needed some improvement to avoid potential risk to the safe deliver of care.

22 August 2012

During a routine inspection

During our unannounced visit on 22 August 2012, we talked to eight people who used the service. One person told us that they 'enjoy coming here, its very comfortable.' Another said that they felt 'well looked after.' Another person said that the care was 'very good, no problems.'

We also spoke to two relatives. One told us that since coming to Beechwood House their relative had 'shown vast improvement in how X looked' and that it 'felt homely.' Another said that they were 'looking for a good home'and this [Beechwood] is it.' Both praised the individual care and attention provided by the home's manager who 'took a weight off my mind' and provided a service offering 'the highest quality I've ever been to.' Both relatives also said it had been important to them that there was 'no smell' on entering the home as this gave them confidence that care was being provided to a high standard.

We saw several cards and letters to the staff at Beechwood thanking them for their care and support including one from July 2012 which said 'Thanks for a wonderful Jubilee Tea Party. You all worked so hard to create a happy party atmosphere. It was lovely for us to share P's enjoyment of the day'.

We also spoke to a district nurse who said that staff were 'capable' and would follow agreed treatment plans but would get in touch if they needed further advice.
