Kindness, compassion and dignity

People received kind, compassionate care. People and their relatives told us they had good relationship with the staff and felt well treated. Their comments included, “I have witnessed first-hand the good care the staff provide”, “[Staff] respect my lifestyle and accommodate my needs” and “The [care workers] go out of their way to help me and my relative.”

Treating people as individuals

Staff treated people as individuals. The registered manager told us they recruited staff who spoke the same languages as people using the service. People and their relatives told us care workers understood their religion and culture which they shared with them. The registered manager told us it was important that staff had a compassionate attitude which reflected the organisation’s values. They described how the support of 1 person to meet their religious needs had helped their mental wellbeing.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were able to make choices about their care and be in control. They and their relatives explained staff always asked for their consent, offered choices and respected their decisions. Staff supported people to do things for themselves and be independent when they were able. The registered manager recorded people’s skills and what they would like to do for themselves within care plans. A relative explained, “[Care workers] work with [person] to allow as much independence as [they] can have whilst still providing adequate care.” A care worker commented, “The best thing about this job is knowing you are making a difference in someone’s life. It is rewarding when you see someone become more independent and happier.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. Staff had responded appropriately in emergency situations and when people became unwell. Relatives confirmed staff listened to them and people to deal with different situations. A relative commented, “[Care workers] are always willing to take advice. The agency is quick to respond to any queries.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider supported staff wellbeing. The registered manager regularly spoke with and met staff to discuss their wellbeing and offer guidance and support. Staff confirmed this and told us they felt there was good support from the registered manager and each other. Comments from staff included, “The support from management has made a huge difference in helping me feel confident, values and motivated”, “The team environment is positive” and “I feel supported by my manager and colleagues.”
