During an inspection looking at part of the service

During this inspection we did not speak directly to people who used the service.

We looked around the premises and found that actions had been taken to address the shortfalls in the safety of the premises identified on our last visit.

We spoke with staff who were positive about the improvements to the environment and quality assurance systems.

We saw the provider now had systems in place that ensured the quality of the service was assessed and monitored.

People told us they were happy with the care and support they received at Howard Castle. They confirmed they were given choices in life and staff supported them to take some risks and be independent.

People we spoke with said, "I like it here, I have no complaints", "I have the best of both worlds as I get to go home" and "Lovely people, lovely place to live."

People said they could receive medical and specialist attention when they needed it and were helped to fulfil their social needs within the home and community. People we spoke with said "I like the garden" and "I wouldn't want to live any where else, this is home."

People told us their home was clean, comfortable and warm. They said "I like my room

and it has everything I need" and "This is an old building that needs some care and attention."

They said staff were kind and caring and seemed to be well trained. People confirmed they were given the opportunity to comment on the service, change routine or raise complaints. They said their visitors were made to feel welcome and information sharing at the home was good but felt they did not always get this from the provider. During an inspection in response to concerns

People who use the service ,or their representatives, told us that the care at the home is usually good but that recent staffing problems have affected the care. People said that " staff are needing to be asked to do things that they would have ordinarily done " and " the details are being missed, but generally staff are managing well under the circumstances." One person said that they had raised this with the Summary of our findings for the essential standards of quality and safety service and would be meeting with the manager about their specific concerns but wanted us to know so that we could do something about this. The people described the staff as "kind", "staff are lovely" and one staff member as " great- will get things done." When we asked people what they would do if they had concerns they said that they would be happy to talk to the staff and they had confidence that things would be addressed. One person said that she felt sorry for the staff as they were all working hard under difficult circumstances
