Our view of the service

Dates of the assessment: 12 to 13 May 2026

Support for Living – 43 Shirley Gardens is a care home without nursing for up to 7 adults with mental health needs. The service is managed by Support for Living, also known as Certitude. At the time of our assessment, 7 people were living at the service.

The last rating for this service was good (published 17 November 2023). The rating has remained good.

There were systems to ensure people received safe care and treatment. People were supported to take risks and make informed choices. Staff assessed these risks and helped people understand how to keep themselves safe. There were systems to help safeguard people from abuse. People knew how to speak up if they had concerns. Staff worked together and with the people they supported, to discuss when things went wrong and learn from incidents and accidents.

There were enough staff to keep people safe and meet their needs. Staff completed a range of training to help them understand about their roles and responsibilities. Staff told us they felt supported and worked well with each other.

People were able to make choices about their care. The registered manager and staff worked with people to develop personalised assessments and care plans. People set their own objectives. Staff helped them achieve these.

People lived in a safe and comfortable environment. They were involved in shopping, preparing food and keeping their home clean. People had regular meetings with staff and each other to discuss the service.

Staff worked closely with external health and social care professionals to ensure people received the right support and care. They empowered people to look after their own physical and mental wellbeing and to make healthy lifestyle choices.

There were effective systems for monitoring and improving the quality of the service. People’s feedback was an essential part of this. The service was well-led. The registered manager was experienced and advocated for people and staff to make sure they received the best service. Senior managers had good oversight and developed organisational systems based on feedback from people.

People's experience of this service

People had a good experience living at the home. They liked living there. They told us they were comfortable, happy and had everything they needed. People had good relationships with staff. They told us they were able to make choices about their lives and the home. People got on well with each other and there was a friendly and calm atmosphere. People explained their needs were met in a personalised way.

Comments from people included, “I like everything”, “The staff are kind to me”, “Staff are supportive and helpful” and “I love everyone here. I like my home. I get on well with everyone.”

Relatives felt people received good care. They told us they were welcomed when they visited. They had regular contact with the registered manager and were involved in discussions about the person, when this was the person’s choice. A relative commented, “The support from staff alleviates the pressure on us. The people there are all very nice.”

People and their relatives knew how to make a complaint and felt they were listened to.
