During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak with most of the people who use the service as they had complex needs and were unable to share their experiences with us. Therefore we used other methods to understand people's experiences such as observation and viewing people's care records.

We saw that the people who use the service and the staff had developed positive relationships with each other and there was a relaxed atmosphere within the home. The staff demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of each person's needs and the support they required. We observed that the staff treated people with respect and communicated with people in an individualised and courteous manner.

People were involved in identifying where they needed support and how this was to be provided. This was reflected in the support plans and risk management plans which detailed how people's needs were to be met through their time at the service.

During a routine inspection

People using the service were not able to verbally communicate with us so we observed how staff interacted with them, spoke with staff and looked at their care records to see how they were cared for and what there experiences were.

We found that people were included in decisions about their care and support and, where they were not able to, they had an appropriate representative to make decisions on their behalf.

We looked at how people's care and support was delivered and we found people had individual support plans that provided comprehensive information about people's care and communication needs. We observed staff following people's support plans and communicating with people respectfully and effectively. Where people were able to use sign language we did attempt to engage with them but they did not want to communicate with us on that occasion.

We looked at the safety of the environment people were cared for within and found regular audits were carried out and the premises were safe and fit for purpose.

We observed staff levels in the home and looked at how people were care for. We found people were able to participate in activities of their choice and were not restricted in activities due to staffing levels.

We looked at the system that was in place for auditing records and ensuring they were maintained. We found that all people's records were appropriately maintained which meant they were not at risk of receiving inappropriate or unsafe care.

During a routine inspection

The people that use the service at Queens Road have learning disabilities and had limited verbal communication. Therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us understand the experiences people have, we observed what was going on in the service.

People indicated to us through smiling and gestures that they were happy with the service. We observed staff involving people in making decisions and choices about their care. Staff were seen listening and communicating in a respectful manner. We saw that staff had a good understanding of people's individual needs and capabilities.

People who use the service and their representatives are involved in the development and review of their support plan. Information is provided in an accessible format and the home encourages people to feed back on the quality of care and support they receive.
