During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection we were able to speak with five people who used the service and a relative. Everyone was very complimentary about the service they received. We were told staff who provided 1:1 support were referred to as Personal Assistants (PA's).

Comments received from those who used the service included:

'I am very happy with West Lancs Positive Living.'

'The staff are very kind.'

'I go out all the time with my PA. He is very good with me.'

A relative commented: 'It's the best thing that ever happened. My daughter wouldn't go anywhere without us. Her PA now takes her out and does whatever she wants to do. Her confidence has soared. She is going to Centre Parcs next month. Her PA is fantastic. I cannot complain about any of the staff. They are all brilliant. We are extremely pleased with everything. West Lancs Positive Living is marvellous.'

During our inspection we looked at how people's needs were met and how their privacy and dignity was maintained. We also assessed standards relating to staff support and recruitment practices adopted by the agency, as well as how complaints were managed and how the service was assessed and monitored. We did not have any concerns with the outcome areas assessed on this occasion.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people using the service and the relative of another who provided us with very positive feedback about West Lancs. Positive Living Limited. They told us privacy; dignity and independence were important aspects of the support provided. They felt their assessed needs were being fully met by staff who were competent to do their jobs and who ensured they were protected from harm.

When asked about the staff the service users comments included:

'They are friendly, kind and caring'feel like they're very responsible'.

'I'm very happy, go on good outings'they listen to you'.

The relative we spoke with told us:

'I think it's a very good service that must continue...we've got a lot of trust in West Lancs. Positive Living 'it takes a long time to build that trust'we have confidence in them'.

We also spoke with three members of staff and asked them what it was like working for West Lancs. Positive Living Limited their comments included:

'Since working here I've referred my sister'to me it's a good service'all the staff I've met are pretty nice'

'I enjoy it, get a lot out of it'it's more than a job' adding 'You're in a position of trust, it's a kind of honour to do it'.

During a routine inspection

During our visit to the agency office we were able to chat with a number of people using the service who had called in with their personal assistants (staff who provide the support). We received positive comments from everyone we spoke with. They were very complimentary about the staff and managers of the service and it was quite evident they were very fond of their allocated personal assistants.

We spoke with two parents of people using the service, who were also very pleased with the support provided by West Lancs Positive Living.

Comments received included:

"I am able to do lots of things with my personal assistant, such as go to the cinema, music concerts, football matches and go out for meals. I do something most days, but if I just feel like staying at home and relaxing we watch a DVD or listen to music."

"It is fantastic. My personal assistant is great. We do so many things together and it is nice that he likes the same things as I do."

"I cannot compliment them (the staff) enough. They are brilliant in every respect."
