During a routine inspection

During our inspection, we observed staff members who obtained consent before any care or support was provided to the person using services. We also saw evidence of family members being involved in decisions related to the care planning process. People's care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that protected them from unlawful discrimination and there were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies. People were protected from the risk of infection and were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment because appropriate guidance had been followed.

Although the workforce was stable with a small turnover of staff, questions were raised, and comments were made from different people related to the numbers of staff used during shifts at Brocklehurst Nursing Home. The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service people received, which included regular staff supervisions that ensured and monitored the quality of care being provided at the home.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with people who used the service at Brocklehurst. Some of the people we spoke with had dementia and were unable to fully express thier views about the service they received. We were able to speak with other people living in the home who told us, 'They do look after you in general, it's not just a job' and 'they always cheer you up somehow'.

We spoke with relatives, one of whom who told us 'Staff are all very nice ' approachable' and another 'I've no complaints really'.

We found evidence that showed people using the service were encouraged to

be independent and have choice over their daily lives. We observed people being treated kindly and with dignity and respect.

The home was very busy but calm. A visiting professional told us 'The atmosphere is always very calm". We spoke to the manager and staff. Some of the staff we spoke with had been working at the home for a long time, which helped to provide continuity in care for the people living there. One member of staff said 'I have been here a long time I like it here'

We looked at medication and found that the home had good systems in place to ensure the safety of the people using the service when receiving their medicines.

We looked at the homes system for recording and dealing with complaints. We found that complaints were well managed and the home had sytems in place to ensure that the views of people using the service were listened to.
