During a routine inspection

We carried out our inspection in an evening.

Bassingham Care Centre had accommodation for people in the rectory building and in bungalows in the grounds. We looked at care for people in both areas.

Many of the people living at the home had dementia and were unable to talk to us about their experiences.

As part of our inspection we spoke with two people who used the service. We also spoke with staff and looked at records. Overall we observed that people were supported by skilled and experienced staff.

We saw people were treated with dignity and supported to make decisions about their care.

People told us they liked living at the home.

People said the food was good and were given a choice at mealtimes.

People said, "You get well looked after."

One person said, "I've got everything I want.'

We saw a number of people who were distressed during our visit and we observed staff being supportive and reassuring people.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who use the service are supported to make choices and remain in control of their lives. For example, a relative of a person who uses the service told us, 'my relative likes to get up in the night and the staff let my relative come downstairs, the staff are great and look after my relative really well.' A person using the service told us 'I can do what I want to do here.'

People told us they feel safe living in the care centre,' I feel safe here; there are some people that get a bit agitated but there is more staff to look after them now so it's OK.' A relative told us 'I feel safe when visiting.'

A person that uses the service told us, 'it is clean and tidy, the toilets and the bathrooms are clean. A relative of a person who uses the service said 'the home is always clean but it could do with decorating and some new carpets.' 'I don't like my relatives bedroom but my relative gets good care here and that the most important thing.'

People using the service told us, 'there are enough carers in the day time but I worry there are not enough staff at night in case something ever happened. ' A relative of a person using the service stated 'there seems to be enough staff.' 'my relative does not always like to go to bed and does not sleep well so the staff will look after my relative downstairs in the lounge at night.'
