During a routine inspection

We observed the care and support people received, and spent time with people in the communal lounges of the home and over lunch. We observed staff being attentive and caring. We saw that people living in the home enjoyed flexible routines dependent upon their individual needs and preferences. People's bedrooms were furnished to a high standard and were decorated with personal effects. People we spoke with told us, 'I couldn`t be in a better place and am more than happy.' 'The staff are very nice and very kind and definitely well trained'. 'We have quizzes and lots of activities and you can go out.' One person told us,' Food is extremely good they are very supportive'. Menus were planned at the monthly residents meetings over a four week rolling menu. However we were told there was a lot of flexibility. 'They would always make something for you; we can get a bit stuck in our ways.'

The home was decorated to a high standard and appeared to be very clean and well maintained. All staff had recently completed a 6 week infection control course. There were a range of audits and systems in place to monitor the quality of the service being provided. These included the home's environment, care plan records, and the maintenance of equipment. We saw records of surveys and staff meetings. They were detailed and this showed us that the management team listened to and valued people`s ideas and feedback regarding the support they provided.

People made positive comments about the home and the staff team. People told us they were well cared for, they felt safe and well and the staff worked well together as a team. People told us their views were listened to and the service was flexible to meet their needs and wishes. Comments made to us were,' They have been very helpful in every way.'

'In the afternoon you can go out, and the time doesn't drag as there is always something going on.'

'The food is good and wholesome and I am not hurried out they wait for me'.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with three about their medicines and the care they received. All were very positive about the way they were cared for and none of them raised any concerns about their medicines.

Comments from residents included;

'Staff are very kind',

'I am well looked after'

'Staff do my medicines for me and them seem well organised'

'I have back pain and I can ask for pain killers when I need them'

'Staff are very good and very well organised'

'I get up and go to bed when I want to'

Overall we found medicines were now safely handled.

During a routine inspection

There were 10 people resident at Victoria House at the time of our visit. We spoke to several people living at the home and all the feedback we received was very positive. It was clear that Victoria house provides an individualised person centred service which is valued by those living there.

We were told that staff are polite and respectful and that people are encouraged and supported to maintain their independence. One person told us staff help her with things she can't manage but also encourage her to do some things herself, commenting; 'It's important isn't it? To keep doing what you can.' Another person spoke to us about the weekly exercise sessions saying; 'I can't always do them all, but they say 'just do what you can' and that is what I try to do.'

An individual told us how they had been upset when a resident had passed away, as they had a close friendship. Staff supported her to attend the funeral and she was glad that she had the chance to pay her respects.

All those spoken to were satisfied with the staff and the care they received. We were also told that staff will always listen and people would feel comfortable raising any concerns. Comments included;' I am very happy here. I know everyone. Staff are marvellous, nothing is too much trouble.'
