During a routine inspection

People we spoke with were happy with the service delivered by the provider. People said that the care workers provided the support and assistance they needed. One person told us "I really don't think I could do without them now. I have one main, regular person who helps me and he is brilliant".

The provider had effective recruitment and selection procedures in place and carried out relevant checks when they employed staff. We saw that staff working for the provider were properly trained, supervised and appraised.

The provider had clear systems in place to obtain feedback from all persons involved in the service as well as auditing their own service. This shows that the provider was reducing the risks identified in order to prevent the service becoming non-compliant with the regulations.

The provider keeps accurate personalised care and support records secure and confidential for each person who uses the service. They also store records in a secure and accessible way.

During a routine inspection

We spoke by telephone with four people who use the service. They all agreed that their privacy and dignity was respected by the service's support workers. One person told us, '[Staff are] always very respectful.'

Three of the people had been involved in drawing up their care plans. They felt that their needs were usually understood by the service's support workers although one person told us of an occasion when two new staff didn't ask to see their care plan: 'I had to show them what to do.'

All the people confirmed that staff encouraged them to be as independent as possible and told us that staff listened to them and acted on what they said. People felt safe with their workers. They confirmed that staff were reliable although two people felt that they did not always receive continuity of care from their team of workers.

Those people who required assistance from staff in administering their medicines described safe practice from support workers. All the people we spoke with felt that, mostly, their support workers were competent and did a good job. Two people felt that support workers would benefit from improved induction training for new staff and one person thought that staff should be provided with more training on the topic of managing dementia. The people were, generally, positive about the quality of the service they received. One person said it was, 'Very good indeed.'
