Springkell House Care Home [Springkell House] is a care home without nursing for up to 35 older people and people living with dementia. There were 27 people living at Springkell House when we visited.

The assessment took place due to concerns raised regarding delays in making health referrals for people when required. We found the provider had put measures in place to address the concerns, implemented systems to minimise risks going forward and provided support to the staff team. We received positive feedback from healthcare professionals regarding how the concerns had been addressed. During our assessment we found some areas which required on-going improvement in relation to how generic risks were monitored and how responses to suggestions were actioned and recorded. The provider assured us they had already identified these concerns and provided evidence of how they were addressing the issues.

People were safe and along with their relatives, were involved in initial assessments, care planning and making decisions regarding their day-to-day care and support. Staff knew people well and were aware of risks to their safety and well-being. Accidents, incidents and complaints were acted upon and monitored to help ensure they did not happen again. People received their medicines as prescribed, and staff received training in how to support people with their medicines safely. Staff understood their responsibilities to keep people safe from harm and abuse and safeguarding concerns were reported and investigated appropriately.

Staff were recruited safely and received an induction, on-going training and regular supervision to support them in their roles. Staff felt supported and valued by the management team and systems were in place to thank staff for the support they provided to people. Staff had the opportunity to provide feedback on the service and felt they were listened to.

A registered manager was in post who had worked at the service in a number of different roles. They demonstrated commitment to developing a positive, person-centred culture which respected people’s diverse needs. Systems were in place to monitor the quality of the service and support people received and to ensure continued learning and improvement.
